Sarlat--city of foie gras, medieval and Renaissance

Hello, again,

First, we want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Cindy Gibson of Hendersonville, TN. She looks young enough to be my daughter (inside joke).

We arrived in Sarlat the afternoon of May 14th. This is a beautiful small city of the Perigord region, an area with medieval villages, castles, rivers, prehistoric caves, food, truffles, and more. Our b & b is called La Maison du Notaire Royal, and it was originally where the city wall was constructed. In the 17th century, the stones from the wall were used to construct the home. Our balcony overlooks the market square. I think I am in heaven.

Because this is a holiday, there are people everywhere here. We joked that it was like traffic in downtown Gatlinburg or Panama City on the strip. However, almost everyone is French, so it is good for me. After getting established, with the help of our proprietor, Pierre-Henri, whose family has owned this home since it was built, we set out to get bread and cheese for a picnic on our balcony. If I can get it, you will see a picture of this. I am getting better in loading pics and editing. Thank goodness there was wi-fi here.

I want to show you a bit of the route we took to get here. Andy set the GPS (our happiness for getting around) on the quickest route. We took the interstate part of the way, but missed a turn, so she had to "recalculate." At that point, we were sent on an alternative route. I am including a picture of the smallest road we took. It could have been a driveway! But it made the journey such an adventure. I am also adding a picture of the countryside which looks a lot like Middle TN and the Fayetteville area or East TN.

Finally, our dinner last night (always food and wine as a center of our existence) was in a small restaurant La Rapiere (sword) where we ate fresh "foie gras" (goose liver pate), a delicacy of the region. Jan and Peggy, you would love this. Even Andy liked it, and he is no liver fan. We ended the meal with creme brulee, since we like to compare restaurant quality with Grossberg home made. Such a great evening.

Back home in our medieval/Renaissance room, we could hardly hit the bed before we were asleep.
